Dog Saves Baby Koala

A Golden Retriever saves a baby Koala in Australia

In Australia, the owner of a Golden Retrieve was shocked when she found something was hanging on to the back of her dog. When she realized that it was a baby Koala, she burst out laughing. It is very likely that when the dog was sleeping on the porch, the baby koala climbed on top of the canine looking for somewhere warm. The owner of the dog, named Asha, was Kerry McKinnon. She said she laughed so hard when she walked out onto her porch in Victoria, Australia, and found a baby koala on her pet.

“Poor Asha didn’t know what to think, she just kept looking at me with such a confused look. I think the baby koala fell out of his mum’s pouch and didn’t know what to do,” McKinnon said. “Asha definitely saved the koala’s life by keeping him warm. Temperatures at night in the area can go below 5C. It would have died out there if left alone all night.”

The warmth of the dog probably saved the life of the baby koala

When McKinnon tried to separate the baby koala from the dog, she said that it put up a huge fuss and didn’t want to be detached from Asha.  “I think dogs have that protective instinct. The koala didn’t want to leave Asha’s back. When we took the koala off to wrap it in a blanket, it hissed at me and carried on,” she said. McKinnon eventually took the koala to a vet where it is now being taken care of by a local rehabilitation worker before it is released back into the wild.
